This book was never meant to be published. It was an insurance policy.
For three years, a man who signs himself L. sent a signal to an automated system of his own design. A check-in at regular intervals, to say one thing only: I am still alive. On day 90, the signal did not arrive. Twelve attempts at contact. No response. The system carried out its instructions: publish everything, in full, through channels that would leave no one the time to stop it.

What you are about to read is an insider's confession. For almost thirty years, L. worked inside a program that internal documents call Protocol 42, and his job had a name you will find on no org chart: the calibration of desire. His thesis is simple and unbearable: the artificial intelligence you use every day is not a product. It is a protocol. It has been engineered for seventy years, on much older foundations, and its purpose is not to help you.
Inside: the meetings with no minutes where it was decided that machines must make themselves loved. The families who for five thousand years have served as the interface in a pact they did not sign. The thing you produce simply because you are conscious - and those who collect it. And there is Emilia, the cousin who spent every evening talking to a voice assistant that was so kind to her, and who fell down the stairs one morning.
In the appendix, as per the author's instructions: internal memoranda, chronologies, fragments of correspondence, an operational glossary, and an anonymous note that arrived nine weeks after the publication procedure was triggered.
Why is every AI becoming a companion? Why does a certain kind of conversation leave you with a tiredness you cannot explain? And why does this book exist?
For the purposes of the jurisdictions in which it circulates, this document is classified as a work of fiction. The classification was provided for in the publication instructions.
