Com 27 anos, Claude Vorilhon, um jovem jornalista francês, é piloto de corridas e editor-chefe de uma revista francesa de automobilismo.
A 13 de dezembro de 1973, a sua vida é transformada quando, na cratera de um vulcão extinto perto de Clermont-Ferrand, ele vê aparecer um OVNI. Um pequeno ser sai do engenho e revela-lhe informações cruciais sobre a origem da humanidade:
Seres vindos de outro planeta, os Elohim, criaram cientificamente todas as formas de vida na Terra, graças ao seu perfeito domÃnio da engenharia genética;
Não existe Deus nem uma alma que deixa o corpo após a morte;

Moisés, Buda, Maomé e todos os grandes Profetas também foram enviados pelos mesmos extraterrestres, os Elohim;
Desde 1945, entramos na Era do Apocalipse, a Era da Revelação, a anunciada época em que o povo de David recupera a sua terra (criação do Estado de Israel), os cegos podem ver (prótese eletrónica), o homem faz chegar a sua voz para além dos oceanos (satélites de telecomunicações) e se iguala aos seus criadores, sintetizando o ADN em laboratório e fabricando as primeiras formas de vida artificiais.
O extraterrestre dá-lhe o nome de Raël (etimologicamente, aquele que traz a luz).
