Este livro é um ensaio cientÃfico-filosófico que parte de uma premissa deliberadamente incômoda: o Homo sapiens pode não ter sido a espécie que naturalmente deveria ter persistido. Não como provocação retórica, mas como conclusão ancorada em evidências factuais que raramente recebem o escrutÃnio que merecem.
O argumento central articula uma distinção operacional entre eficácia - a capacidade de resolver problemas e inovar - e efetividade, medida pela persistência no tempo profundo. Sob esse segundo eixo, o Homo erectus, que habitou a Terra por quase dois milhão de anos em equilÃbrio relativo com a biosfera, supera o sapiens por margem esmagadora. Nós existimos há cerca de 300 mil anos, e, em doze milênios de civilização, construÃmos arsenais nucleares, desestabilizamos o clima planetário e produzimos epidemias de sofrimento psicológico sem precedente.
Este ensaio também examina a hipertrofia cognitiva do sapiens - expansão desproporcionada dos córtices pré-frontal e parietal - não como progresso linear, mas como o desenvolvimento que gerou fascÃnio, mas também condenação. A linguagem recursiva e simbólica, que nos permite construir filosofia e arte, é a mesma que mantém ameaças afetivamente presentes mesmo tendo desaparecidas há décadas, projetando ameaças em futuros que nunca existirão. O sistema lÃmbico não distingue ameaça real de ameaça narrada: somos a única espécie que sofre sistematicamente por mundos que não existem, que são pura especulação.
Ao longo de seis momentos argumentativos, a exposição chama Foucault para diagnosticar a angústia como produção histórica, Lipovetsky para caracterizar a hipermodernidade como sintoma terminal, e Sagan para inscrever o sapiens na indiferença cósmica, em que a extinção é regra, não exceção. Wittgenstein e Merleau-Ponty operam como ferramentas analÃticas na interrogação da linguagem como dupla face: ferramenta e ferida. Cioran fornece a formulação mais precisa do impasse: a consciência como doença incurável, o conhecimento que não pode ser desaprendido.
O ensaio não oferece soluções. Soluções pressupõem que o problema é um defeito corrigÃvel, mas a tese é a de que se trata de um erro de projeto. A conclusão é uma constatação fria: o Homo erectus venceu pelo único critério que a Natureza parece demonstrar que reconhece: o tempo profundo. O Homo sapiens - brilhante, deslumbrante, complexo - é apenas um fracasso evolutivo em câmera lenta, que possui, entre as espécies que já existiram, o privilégio singular de saber disso.
