In the Room is a warm and tender story about family, prayer, and discovering that being separated from the people you love does not mean you have to feel alone.
Ke Ke has pink eye, and Mama says she must stay in her bedroom while she takes her medicine and gives her eyes time to get better.
At first, staying home seems like fun. Ke Ke doesn't have to go to school, she gets a break from Gnat, and Mama gives her plenty of special attention.
But today is Saturday.
Ke Ke can hear Daddy cutting the grass and Rob and Gnat playing outside. She feels better than she did yesterday, but she still has to remain in her room. Even worse, if she doesn't continue getting better, she may not be able to go to church on Sunday.
Ke Ke is bored, lonely, and tired of watching everyone else have fun without her.
Mama stays close to care for Ke Ke-and, if she is honest, Mama doesn't mind that her only girl wants her nearby. But Mama is also concerned because this is the first time Ke Ke has been sick like this.
Then Me Maw comes into the room.
While comforting both Mama and Ke Ke, Me Maw remembers taking care of Mama when she was a little girl. That memory leads her to tell Ke Ke about the Shunammite woman-a mother who held her sick son close, refused to give up, and went to the prophet Elisha for help.
Elisha prayed, and God restored the woman's son.
Me Maw also reminds Ke Ke that their family prayed when Mama and Gnat were sick because the Bible says:
And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. -James 5:15
Together, Mama and Me Maw pray for Ke Ke right there in her bedroom.
The room that felt lonely becomes a place of stories, memories, prayer, and care. Ke Ke begins to understand that healing is not only about feeling better. Sometimes it begins when we realize that we are loved, remembered, and never alone.
Filled with family warmth, three generations of love, and an age-appropriate biblical lesson, In the Room is a comforting bonding story for children recovering at home or in the hospital. It gently reminds children that prayer and care go together-and that love can fill even the smallest room.
