Polly Opossum is a heartwarming children's story set in the lush coastal landscape of Spring Cove Plantation in Harris Neck, Georgia. Deep in the trees near a lively family orchard lives a gentle opossum family-and their youngest, Polly, is a little different from the rest. Unlike her siblings, Polly has trouble seeing at night. Shy and cautious, she prefers the safety of her mother's pouch and the familiar branches of home. While other opossums dart confidently through the darkness, Polly often bumps into things and becomes the target of teasing. She doesn't understand why seeing clearly comes so easily to everyone else.
Fortunately, Polly has a true friend. Margaret Mae, one of the Thorpe grandchildren who lives nearby, knows what it feels like to be teased for being different. Near-sighted herself, Margaret Mae wears glasses and understands that needing help doesn't mean something is wrong-it simply means finding the right solution. With kindness, creativity, and help from Granny and Papa Thorpe, Margaret Mae discovers a way to help Polly see the world more clearly. When Polly receives a special pair of bright red glasses, everything changes. Suddenly, Polly's weakness becomes her strength, and she shines in ways no one expected.
Polly Opossum is a gentle, affirming story about friendship, empathy, and embracing differences. It teaches young readers that everyone has unique challenges-and with support and understanding, those challenges can become gifts. Perfect for children ages 4-8, this story encourages compassion, confidence, and the joy of seeing yourself just as you are.
