The Playboy of the Western World is a three-act play by Irish playwright John Millington Synge, first performed in 1907. Set in a rural pub on the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland, it tells the story of Christy Mahon, a young man who claims to have killed his tyrannical father. His tale captivates the local community, and he is celebrated as a hero, particularly by Pegeen Mike, the publican's daughter. However, when Christy's father, Old Mahon, turns up alive, the villagers' admiration turns to scorn. In a desperate attempt to regain their esteem, Christy attacks his father again, seemingly killing him. Rather than restoring his status, this act horrifies the community, leading them to attempt to punish him. Ultimately, Old Mahon survives once more, and he and Christy depart together, leaving Pegeen lamenting the loss of the only playboy of the western world.
