Plato's Cosmology And Thucydides Mythistoricus is a book written by Francis MacDonald Cornford, which delves into the cosmological and mythological beliefs of ancient Greece. The author explores the works of two prominent Greek philosophers, Plato and Thucydides, and analyzes their views on the nature of the universe and the role of myths in shaping human understanding. The book begins by examining Plato's cosmology, which is centered around the idea of a perfect, eternal world of Forms or Ideas, and the imperfect, changing world of sensory experience. Cornford explores the implications of this dualistic view for Plato's understanding of the human soul, ethics, and politics. The second part of the book focuses on Thucydides, a historian who chronicled the Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. Cornford argues that Thucydides' account of the war is not just a factual record of events, but also a mythic narrative that reflects the deeper cultural and political beliefs of the Greeks.Throughout the book, Cornford draws on his extensive knowledge of Greek literature, philosophy, and history to provide a nuanced and insightful analysis of the cosmological and mythological ideas that shaped ancient Greek culture. This book is an essential read for anyone interested in the intellectual history of ancient Greece, and the enduring influence of Greek thought on Western civilization.Plato's Cosmology: The Timaeus of Plato Translated with a Running Commentary and Thucydides Mythistoricus. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
