At just six years of age, a brutal Spanish raid takes everything from Ixchel, including the memory of her parents and her name. She spends decades trying to recover those memories while she grows up in the pirate town of Puerto Diablo in Yucatán, Mexico.
She doesn't much care for pirates and allows only a handful of them into her life. Captain Jude Nicks is one. Another of her friends, a Maya man named Tuc, who believes she is the woman his ancestors foretold will recover Maya treasure and return it to his village. She's sure he hallucinated the conversation with his ancestors.

Jude convinces Ixchel to help steal a ship. After that, they steal a cache of emeralds owed to him by the town's despot, Captain Horace McCoven. The next day, he is caught with the emeralds and Horace's mistress and locked in the town jail.
Horace threatens to kill Ixchel, so she must flee Puerto Diablo, but the only way out is on Jude's ship. She and Tuc concoct a plan to use hallucinogenic herbs to break Jude out of jail and escape on his ship.
Once they sail away from Puerto Diablo, they plan to salvage Maya and Spanish gold from a sunken treasure galleon, but Horace, the Spanish, and a hurricane stand in their way.
