The Physician In Spite Of Himself is a comedic play written by French playwright Moliere, whose real name was Jean Baptiste Poquelin. The play was first performed in 1666 and tells the story of a woodcutter named Sganarelle who is mistaken for a doctor by a wealthy man named Geronte. Sganarelle, who has no medical training, is forced to pretend to be a physician in order to help Geronte's daughter, who has been struck mute. Despite his lack of knowledge, Sganarelle manages to cure the young woman by using a variety of absurd and comical methods. Along the way, he also manages to outsmart several other characters who are trying to expose his fraud.
