The Philosophy of Art by Curt John Ducasse is a rigorous and influential exploration into the fundamental nature of artistic creation and aesthetic appreciation. Moving beyond traditional objective definitions of beauty, Ducasse posits a compelling theory of art as the expression of human feeling. This work meticulously analyzes the relationship between the artist, the work, and the observer, arguing that the essence of art lies in its ability to provide a unique form of emotional communication that transcends mere utility or moral instruction.
Throughout the text, Ducasse examines the psychological underpinnings of the aesthetic experience and the specific criteria that define a work as art. He challenges contemporary norms by focusing on the intrinsic value of the aesthetic object and the subjective nature of taste. The book covers a wide spectrum of topics, including the role of the critic, the distinction between art and craft, and the structural elements common to various artistic disciplines. The Philosophy of Art serves as an essential foundation for students of aesthetics and anyone interested in the intellectual history of how we perceive and value the arts. It remains a vital contribution to philosophical discourse, offering a clear and systematic framework for understanding the profound impact of the aesthetic world on the human spirit.
