The Philosophy and Psychology of Pietro Pomponazzi is a book written by Andrew Halliday Douglas that explores the ideas and contributions of the Italian Renaissance philosopher Pietro Pomponazzi. The book delves into Pomponazzi's philosophical and psychological theories, which challenged the dominant Aristotelian worldview of his time.Douglas examines Pomponazzi's views on the nature of the soul, the afterlife, and the relationship between reason and faith. He also discusses Pomponazzi's influence on the development of modern psychology, particularly his emphasis on the importance of empirical observation and experimentation. The book provides a comprehensive overview of Pomponazzi's life and work, including his controversial views on the immortality of the soul and his clashes with the Catholic Church. Douglas situates Pomponazzi's ideas within the broader intellectual and cultural context of the Renaissance, highlighting their significance for the history of philosophy and psychology.Overall, The Philosophy and Psychology of Pietro Pomponazzi offers a detailed and engaging exploration of the ideas of one of the most important thinkers of the Renaissance period. It will be of interest to scholars and students of philosophy, psychology, and intellectual history.1910. Edited by Charles Douglas and R.P. Hardie. An essay on Pietro Pomponazzi, the philosopher and founder of the Aristotelian-Averroistic School. His great work De immortalitate animi, gave rise to a storm of controversy between the orthodox Thomists of the Catholic Church, the Averroists headed by Agostino Nifo, and the so-called Alexandrist School. The treatise was burned at Venice, and Pomponazzi himself ran serious risk of death at the hands of the Catholics. Two pamphlets followed, the Apologia and the Defensorium, wherein he explained his paradoxical position as Catholic and philosophic materialist. His last two treatises, the De incantationibus and the De fato, were posthumously published in an edition of his works printed at Basel. Chapters: Aristotle in the Early Middle Ages; The Arabians and St. Thomas; Pomponazzi as an Aristotelian; Pomponazzi's Psychology; The Soul; Intelligence; Sense; Reason; Knowledge; The Nature of Virtue; and Natural Law in Human Life and Religion. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations. Because we believe this work is culturally important, we have made it available as part of our commitment for protecting, preserving, and promoting the world's literature in affordable, high quality, modern editions, that are true to their original work.
