When the Church Fathers set out to explain Christian revelation, they reached for the tools closest at hand - the metaphysics of Plato and Aristotle. It seemed reasonable at the time. It was, Kent Mayeux argues, a disaster. Truth became entangled in pagan speculation, divine law was quietly set aside, and twenty centuries of confusion followed.
Philosophica Theologica proposes a different foundation.
It begins with two admissions modern philosophy refuses to make: that God exists, and that we are created beings. From there it builds a complete system - one in which truth is the awareness of the synergy between divine law and natural law, whereby man discovers himself through rational thought.
Natural law governs everything that exists: the elements, life, reproduction, memory, movement, time, light, death. It is neutral. It is neither good nor bad. It simply happens.
Divine law governs only humans - our thoughts, our morality, our relationships with each other and with God. It does not simply happen. It must be revealed, learned, and practiced. And when a society stops teaching it, natural law rushes in to fill the vacuum. Men become animals with better tools.
Working through cosmology, epistemology, metaphysics, ontology, ethics, anthropology, and theology, Mayeux takes on the questions that have occupied thinkers since Aquinas - and answers them without the Greek scaffolding:
- Why knowledge and truth are not the same thing, and why confusing them has crippled both science and religion
- What time actually is, and why both Plato and Aristotle got it wrong
- Where the soul comes from, whether animals have one, and what happens to it
- Why the universe is expanding - and what it is expanding into
- How evil enters a world governed by a good God
- Why a purely secular moral system collapses into subjectivity the moment two people disagree
Written by a Louisiana attorney with a lawyer's instinct for definition and distinction, Philosophica Theologica is short, direct, and unafraid of conclusions. It is not a survey of what other men have thought. It is an argument.
