Anna Kingsford was a prominent English physician, mystic, and early advocate for women's rights, vegetarianism, and the anti-vivisection movement. One of the first English women to receive a medical degree-and the only one of her time to complete her studies without performing experiments on animals-Kingsford earned her doctorate in Paris in 1880 after six years of rigorous work at the Faculté de Médecine. Her research combined physiological inquiry with ethical conviction, aiming to promote scientific progress that upheld humanitarian and spiritual principles.

Originally written in French as her doctoral thesis, The Perfect Way in Diet was published in English in 1881. The treatise articulates Kingsford's vision of dietary reform as both a physical and moral necessity, connecting nutrition to the purification of the body and the elevation of the soul. Drawing upon contemporary medical science, Christian mysticism, and esoteric philosophy, the work advances the argument that abstinence from animal flesh fosters not only compassion but also spiritual refinement. Within the broader context of nineteenth-century reform movements, Kingsford's text stands as a seminal contribution to ethical vegetarianism and the intersection between science, spirituality, and moral evolution.
