The Penetration of Money Economy in Japan and Its Effects Upon Social and Political Institutions is a profound historical and economic analysis exploring the transformative shift from a rice-based barter system to a complex monetary economy. Matsuyo Takizawa examines the decline of the traditional feudal structure and the subsequent disintegration of the rigid class hierarchy that defined Japan for centuries.
The work meticulously details how the introduction and expansion of currency altered the power dynamics between the samurai, the peasantry, and the emerging merchant class. By tracing the growth of commerce, changes in taxation, and the rise of urban centers, Takizawa demonstrates how underlying economic forces acted as the primary catalyst for the social and political upheavals of the late Tokugawa period. This study provides essential insights into the structural causes behind Japan's rapid modernization and the eventual Meiji Restoration. It remains a significant contribution to the understanding of East Asian history, offering a scholarly look at the intersection of economic theory and social change. This text is an invaluable resource for those interested in the historical development of Japanese political institutions and the evolution of global economic systems.
