The Second World War did not begin in 1939. It began being possible in 1919 - and for twenty years, the men who saw it coming declined every chance to stop it.

Versailles gets the blame. The American banks deserve more of it. The republic the treaty supposedly doomed survived the treaty, survived hyperinflation, and reached 1928 stable and growing, with the Nazi Party polling 2.6 percent and losing members. Then the short-term American credit that had financed Germany's five good years went home - five years to extend, roughly eighteen months to withdraw. German unemployment rose from 1.4 million to over six million, and the Nazi vote rose from 2.6 percent to 37.3 percent, across the same window. Those two curves, laid one over the other, are the core of this book's argument: the treaty loaded the weapon, and the credit withdrawal pulled the trigger. Neither, alone, fires.
