Paul and Virginia is a novel written by French author Bernadin de Saint-Pierre. The story is set on the island of Mauritius in the Indian Ocean and follows the lives of two childhood friends, Paul and Virginia. The two grow up together in a peaceful and idyllic environment, surrounded by nature and the beauty of the island. As they mature, they fall in love with each other, but their love is forbidden by their families due to their different social classes. Despite this, they continue to love each other in secret and dream of a future together. However, tragedy strikes when a cyclone hits the island, causing widespread destruction and separating Paul and Virginia. They are both rescued, but Virginia falls ill and dies, leaving Paul devastated. The novel explores themes of love, loss, and the beauty of nature, and is considered a classic of French literature. It has been translated into many languages and has inspired numerous adaptations in film, opera, and theater. The conversation was gentle and innocent as the repasts. Paul often talked of the labours of the day, and those of the morrow. He was continually forming some plan of accommodation for their little society. Here he discovered that the paths were rough; there that the family circle was ill seated: sometimes the young arbours did not afford sufficient shade, and Virginia might be better pleased elsewhere. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
