Every congregation believes it takes its pattern from Christ. Every congregation also carries assumptions about what is decent, proper and even biblical that were learned long before anyone opened a Bible - and those assumptions are invisible to the people who hold them.
Billy Abwa has spent three decades pastoring on the Plateau of central Nigeria, where the cost of unexamined culture has been measured in burned buildings and buried neighbours. Writing from that ground, and with an eye on congregations from Belfast to São Paulo, he traces how the church at Corinth was shaped by its city, how Israel asked for a king like the nations, and how Jesus - fully at home in his own culture - broke its every mould, at his table, on a donkey, with a towel, and finally on a cross that offended everyone.
The second half of the book turns to the places where congregations most often baptise their surroundings: political loyalty, money and status, tribe and nationality, and the institutional pride that cannot say 'we were wrong'. It closes with practices any ordinary church can adopt - reading Scripture with those unlike us, listening as if the other person may be right, keeping the Table wide, and forming the next generation to see the water.
Drawing on voices rarely heard in Western church books, and on the confessions of churches that faced this reckoning under real pressure, this is neither a lament nor a scolding. It is a working manual for congregations willing to examine the water, name what they find, and walk free.
Twenty-two chapters, each with discussion questions for personal reflection or group study, plus a guide offering four routes through the book for study groups, leadership teams and preachers.
