This book is a collection of poems by Walt Whitman about the Civil War, the life and death of President Lincoln, and Whitman's views regarding what it means to experience life as an American. He was born on Long Island in New York, and lived from 1819 to 1892. He was a poet, essayist, and journalist, expressing views of humanism, transcendentalism, and realism. He championed, and probably originated, the concept of free verse. He is one of the country's most prominent poets. Leaves of Grass is his most famous book.
