This paper examines the education of middle-class girls during the Age of Enlightenment, particularly the Late Enlightenment. To this end, two guidebooks for girls have been selected: Joachim Heinrich Campe's *Fatherly Advice for My Daughter* and Georg Friedrich Niemeyer's *A Father's Legacy to Helene*. Although both authors were Enlightenment thinkers, they can be associated with different pedagogical approaches. Whilst Campe was one of the leading proponents of Philanthropism, Niemeyer belonged to the New Humanism movement. The aim is therefore to use these two works to demonstrate the differing yet shared ideas regarding the education of girls. The assumption that there was a uniform concept for the upbringing and education of middle-class girls during the Enlightenment can be refuted simply by the differing educational concepts espoused by the authors.
