Parmenides in Apophatic Philosophy is a rigorous and unconventional study of the relationship between Parmenides of Elea and Pseudo-Dionysius the Areopagite, centered on the proposition that De Mystica Theologia can be read as a philosophical antithesis to Parmenides' peri physeos. The book examines the two works not merely as historical texts, but as competing responses to a fundamental epistemological problem: what can be known, what cannot be expressed, and what lies beyond the ordinary limits of language and sense perception.
Michael M. Nikoletseas approaches the subject through close engagement with the original Greek texts. Particular attention is given to the vocabulary, imagery, rhetorical structure, and philosophical concepts shared by Parmenides and Dionysius. The study traces recurring themes of being and non-being, knowledge and ignorance, light and darkness, assertion and negation, and the tension between ordinary language and forms of understanding that appear to exceed it.
A substantial portion of the book is devoted to De Mystica Theologia itself. Nikoletseas examines its central apophatic method: the progressive stripping away of attributes from the divine, the abandonment of sensory and intellectual faculties, and the movement toward what Dionysius describes through darkness, silence, unknowing, and the ineffable. The book emphasizes Dionysius' use of the philosophical term αἰτία-cause-as the principal object of the inquiry, and explores the implications of treating the work as philosophical and epistemological rather than exclusively theological.
The analysis also considers the literary character of De Mystica Theologia, including its use of negation, superlatives, paradox, repetition, alliteration, and symbolic imagery. These features are compared with Parmenidean language and with earlier Greek philosophical traditions. A detailed concordance identifies verbal, conceptual, and structural parallels between Parmenides' fragments and Dionysius' treatise, allowing the reader to examine the proposed relationship directly.
At the center of Nikoletseas' interpretation of Parmenides is the argument that τὸ ἐόν should not be understood simply as the metaphysical Being inherited from later Platonic and theological traditions. Instead, he proposes that Parmenides was pointing toward a new modus cogitandi-a formal or logical means of representing nature, perhaps analogous to a calculus. In this reading, Parmenides seeks a new path to knowledge, while Dionysius moves in the opposite direction, toward negation, abandonment, and the limits of cognition.
The discussion extends beyond Parmenides and Dionysius to Plato, the Neoplatonists, Eriugena, Cusanus, Kant, Schopenhauer, Wittgenstein, psychoanalysis, and the philosophy of science. Throughout, the author challenges purely linguistic and metaphysical approaches to knowledge by bringing into the discussion his background in neuroscience, natural science, mathematics, and epistemology.
Parmenides in Apophatic Philosophy is therefore both a study of ancient and late-antique philosophy and a broader investigation into the limits of knowledge. It will be of particular interest to readers of Presocratic philosophy, Neoplatonism, apophatic theology, classical Greek thought, epistemology, philosophy of language, and the historical relationship between philosophy and science.
