Seventeen-year-old Pampa is an outcast on an island of forty-three people. They see a boy who builds useless toys in tide pools. He sees a world made of pieces, waiting for the right hands to put them together.
When a magical, two-hundred-year-old Map washes ashore, promising the legendary Final Piece, Pampa finally has his chance. On a chaotic boat built from storm-salvage, he sails into the Block Sea-an ocean made of interlocking bricks, where the laws of physics are merely suggestions.
But the treasure has other hunters. Captain Stormwall, the infamous pirate king, is on his trail with a fleet of black-and-gold warships. To win, Pampa and his misfit crew-a chronically unlucky sailor and a street-thief who trusts no one-must survive ancient, sentient islands and a sea of dead ships that remembers everything.
The greatest danger, however, isn't the pirates or the traps. The closer Pampa gets to the treasure, the more its magic takes a toll, causing his own block-body to literally crack and dissolve.
He left home to find his destiny. Now, he'll have to figure out how to survive it before he completely falls apart.
