These madrigals, for four unaccompanied equal voices (male or female), are polytonal: each voice sings in a different scale, yet the harmonic result is always consonant. The chord succession is always unexpected.
They are based on the Pageant Verses of Thomas More (1478-1535):
I. Childhood, II. Manhood, III. Venus and Cupide, IV. Age, V. Death, VI. Fame, VII. Time, VIII. Eternity, IX. The Poet.
