Pageant of Liberty is a sweeping historical drama designed to celebrate the spirit of freedom and the foundational events of American history. Created by Percy Jewett Burrell, Laura F. Kready, and H. Clifton Thorbahn, this work stands as a significant example of the community pageant movement that flourished in the early twentieth century. Through a series of choreographed episodes and dramatic recitations, the work chronicles the struggle for independence and the evolution of democratic ideals.
The text provides a detailed script and structural framework for a grand-scale theatrical production, blending music, movement, and narrative to evoke a sense of national pride. It focuses on pivotal moments such as the signing of the Declaration of Independence and the hardships of the Revolutionary era, portraying the figures and forces that shaped the United States. As a literary and historical document, Pageant of Liberty captures the cultural and patriotic sentiments of its time, offering insight into how history was interpreted and performed for public audiences. It remains a compelling resource for those interested in American theatrical history, the development of historical commemorations, and the artistic expression of civic identity.
