A hardened death-row inmate, haunted by his violent past, is unexpectedly freed into a world collapsing into chaos. His mission: rescue the family of his estranged son from a fanatical doomsday cult before civilization falls. The journey forces him through a landscape of social madness, brutality, and lawlessness, where survival demands he confront the violence he has spent years trying to bury. At the heart of the cult awaits something far more terrifying than its followers-a barbaric false god whose rise may be tied to the coming end of the world. To save his son's family, he must fight his way through a civilization tearing itself apart, confront the monster he once was, and ultimately face the false god itself. If he survives, he may finally earn redemption in his son's eyes. If he fails, a global cataclysm will quite possibly erase human civilization-and reset all life on Earth.
Coleman Frank is trying to recover something precious from his past. After a quarter of a century in prison for killing a police officer in cold blood, Coleman goes in search of his estranged son, but finds he's been released in the weeklong period of time between the public announcement of an impending global cataclysm and the actual event that brings it to pass. Government in every form and all of their services are shuttered. News outlets are silent. There is no internet, phone, or power. Most importantly, all police and military presence is absent. People descend into chaos like they tend to do when the threat of retribution is removed. Coleman is a small man from a small place who is suddenly thrust into a broken, extremely dangerous environment where morality takes a back seat to survival. At his son's behest, he embarks on a journey to a Spanish Fort in Florida. There, he confronts a doomsday deity that craves worship in the form of ultimate sacrifice. Coleman cannot complete his mission until he takes the reins from his tortured past, claims control of his family's destiny, and sets a redemptive course for everything to come after him. The knowledge he gained from a life in prison is his most valuable commodity. Though he should be poorly equipped to navigate life on the outside, he finds he might be the best person to survive it.
This dystopian thriller explores themes of survival, redemption, and the cyclical nature of human civilization. Written in a gritty and introspective style, it is ideal for readers who enjoy complex characters, pre-apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic settings, and philosophical reflections on human nature and society and the complexities of familial relationships. The story unfolds primarily in the southeastern United States, spanning from Stone Mountain in Georgia to a Spanish Fort in Florida to the Biltmore Mansion in North Carolina, and is set against the backdrop of an impending asteroid impact with the moon and the ensuing societal collapse.
