Oyepolu's mother died when he was very, very small - lenje-lenje, the old people say. Nobody taught him the old ways after that. So when the elders call him to do the rites of his father's house, and set the water, the kola nut and the palm wine down in front of him, Oyepolu does not know where to begin. He says so. And he weeps.
The elders do not laugh. They do not send him away to learn it properly first. They tell him the thing he will carry the rest of his life: Then kneel, and call.
Retold from a verse of Oturupon Meji - the Odu invoked when memory must be made whole - this is a story for every child who was not taught, and asked anyway.
A square full-colour picture book for ages 4-8, with a glossary of Yoruba words and a note for grown-ups.
