On that July morning of 1889 Lark and Jackson waved goodbye to their family at the train station in Calgary, Alberta. While the rest of the Hoise family was bound for the west coast, the two boys were looking forward to their own adventure. Tasked with returning the wagon and horses to the family ranch on the South fork of the Oldman river west of Pincher Creek, the two brothers were looking forward to the journey home.
At twelve years old going on thirteen, Jackson saw this as a chance to bond with his older brother, away from the numerous Moreau cousins back on the H&M Ranch. For sixteen year old Lark, this was an opportunity to prove himself both, capable and responsible. At his age, his Pa, Jack Hoise was already guiding wagon trains on the northern route from Minnesota to Montana. Both his Pa and his Ma, Night Walker Woman had scouted and guided up the Whoop-up trail until both the Whiskey Traders and the buffalo were gone.
To add to the challenge of the adventure, Lark planned to travel home via an outlaw trail. Known as the Owl Trail, this route was one of the few his folks had not already explored. They had intended to lead a wagon train up from the south in 1870. Despite assurances from several Piikani Chiefs, their wagon train was attacked at Massacre Butte. So no Hoise had ever completed the trail.
Just as the brothers were about to set out, things got... complicated. A small party of adventurers from England bound for the Rocky Mountains had their guide renege on the arrangements. They were not adverse to a change in destination if Lark and Jackson were willing to include them in their own expedition.
Who was this mysterious Mrs. Campbell and her French Canadian companion, Joselyn Hardy? How did they end up with the gruff Angus McTavish from Norway House as their chaperone?
To get to the head of the Owl Trail, Lark and Jackson must first pass through some of the biggest Ranches in the territory of Alberta at that time. The famous Bar U becomes their initial destination with the Walrond Ranch further along. The Summer holiday atmosphere turns dark at some point. Lark and his brother forgot that they had been warned during a ceremony that spring down on the Milk River at A'isinai'pi Where the Writings Are. Night Walker Woman's grandma had told them about the malevolent spirit lurking in the vicinity of Thunder Mountain. Some forgotten remnant from Blackfoot legends offended by events in the past, looking for retribution.
The Hoise brothers would be tested to the limits if they hoped to get their guests safely to the far end of The Owl Trail.
