From the earliest centuries of the Church, Christians have looked upon the vast sweep of Roman history with a sense of awe, not merely because Rome shaped the world in which the Gospel first appeared, but because Rome seemed to stand at the crossroads of divine providence. The Roman Empire was not simply a political entity, nor merely a civilization among others. For the Fathers of the Church, Rome was a stage prepared by God, a vessel-often imperfect, sometimes resistant, yet undeniably chosen-to bear the weight of salvation history. To contemplate Rome is to contemplate the mysterious ways in which God guides human affairs, bending even the ambitions of emperors and the rise and fall of nations toward the fulfillment of His eternal plan.
This book seeks to explore that mystery. It aims to understand how, within the complex fabric of Roman civilization, God prepared the world for the coming of Christ, sustained the infant Church amid persecution, and ultimately transformed the Empire from within. The Roman Empire, stretching from the Atlantic to the Euphrates, from the deserts of Africa to the forests of northern Europe, created a unity of peoples, languages, and laws unprecedented in human history. This unity, fragile yet real, provided the conditions in which the Gospel could spread with a speed and universality that would have been impossible in earlier ages.
