There is a particular kind of silence that settles over the archive when the person being written about was never expected to read what was written. It is not the silence of absence, the record, in the case of the eight lives gathered in this book, is often surprisingly full, scattered across mission letters, court chronicles, naval logs, baptismal registers, and the marginal notes of European clerks who could not always be bothered to spell a name correctly. It is instead the silence of a particular kind of framing: the silence of a subject who is described constantly and consulted rarely, whose actions are recorded in exhaustive detail while the interior life that produced those actions is left, almost without exception, for someone else to imagine on his or her behalf.
This book is an attempt to imagine it back. Not carelessly, and not in defiance of what the record actually shows, but with the conviction that a documentary trace, however thin, is not the same thing as a life, and that the difference between the two is precisely where a writer's responsibility begins. The eight figures gathered here, Christian Ruffo, Ganamee Yaa'ii, Malik Ambar, Yasuke, Bisho Jarsa, Alexander Nivell, Onesimos Nesib, and Aster Ganno, were all, in one way or another, Oromo. They were born, or their people were born, in the highlands and river valleys of what is now Oromia, in the great swath of the Horn of Africa's interior that produced one of the continent's most sophisticated indigenous systems of governance, the Gada system, and one of its richest oral literatures, built from proverb, riddle, and song across centuries of careful transmission from grandmother to granddaughter, from elder to initiate. And every one of them was taken from that inheritance by force, sold into a commerce that treated a human life as a unit of value rather than a bearer of history, and carried outward, by caravan, by dhow, by galleon, by the long overland roads of three separate continents, into a world that had, in nearly every case, no idea what it had actually acquired.
That is the argument of this book, stated as plainly as I know how to state it: the international slave trade that moved Oromo captives out of the highlands of eastern Africa across four centuries did not simply move bodies. It moved minds formed by one of the world's great oral civilizations, minds carrying inside them, the way Aster Ganno carried her grandmother's riddles across a slave ship's hold and set them down decades later as the seed of a nation's first written literature, a store of knowledge, discipline, and linguistic sophistication that the societies receiving these captives almost never troubled to ask about, and that these captives, in case after remarkable case, went on to deploy anyway, transforming the very institutions that had enslaved them: a regency in the Deccan plateau of India, a samurai's household in sixteenth-century Japan, a mission press on the Eritrean coast, a Catholic seminary in Europe, an American abolitionist lecture circuit, and, in the case of the two stories that anchor this collection's final chapters, the actual written grammar of the Oromo language itself.
