The Origin of Freemasonry: The 1717 Theory Exploded is a book written by Chalmers Izett Paton in 1871. The book challenges the commonly accepted theory that Freemasonry was founded in 1717 in London, England. Paton argues that the roots of Freemasonry can be traced back much further, to the medieval stonemasons who built the great cathedrals of Europe.Paton's book provides a detailed analysis of the history and symbolism of Freemasonry, drawing on a wide range of sources including historical documents and Masonic literature. He argues that the origins of the organization can be traced to the guilds of stonemasons who worked on the great cathedrals of Europe, and that the modern form of Freemasonry emerged from these guilds in the 17th century. The book also explores the various myths and legends surrounding Freemasonry, including the idea that the organization is connected to the Knights Templar and the idea that it has a secret agenda to control the world. Paton argues that these ideas are largely unfounded and that Freemasonry is simply a fraternal organization dedicated to promoting moral and ethical values.Overall, The Origin of Freemasonry: The 1717 Theory Exploded is a fascinating exploration of the history and symbolism of Freemasonry, and a valuable resource for anyone interested in the organization's origins and evolution. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
