Founded in 1561 by Cosimo I de' Medici through a papal bull, the Order of Saint Stephen Pope and Martyr was conceived as a naval militia in the service of Christendom and as an instrument for consolidating the newly established Tuscan state. Over the centuries, its military, religious, and noble character made it one of the principal institutional pillars of Medicean Tuscany.
This volume offers a historical-critical and juridical study of the Order from its foundation to the present day. It examines the bull His quae pro Religionis propagatione, the symbolic and heraldic configuration of the institution, its role in shaping Tuscan nobility, its development under the Lorraine dynasty, and the complex question of succession following the extinction of the Popolano branch of the Medici.
