Dans Pour en finir avec l'intelligence, Thierry Ottaviani propose un essai décapant sur l'avènement de l'intelligence artificielle et la façon dont elle redéfinit nos repères les plus fondamentaux. Loin des discours enthousiastes qui célèbrent sans nuance les prouesses technologiques, l'auteur invite à un recul critique sur la notion même d' intelligence . En réalité, affirme-t-il, ce que l'IA est en train de remplacer n'est pas notre humanité, mais une certaine idée réductrice, mécanique et productiviste de l'intelligence, une idée que nous avons acceptée trop vite comme la nôtre.
L'essai s'ouvre sur un exemple volontairement caricatural: une scène du quotidien rédigée par ChatGPT, fluide et sans aspérité, mais vide de profondeur. Ce pastiche parfait, invisible à l'oeil non averti, devient l'emblème d'un monde où les simulacres se substituent peu à peu à l'expérience, au vivant, à la pensée. Ottaviani remonte alors l'histoire de l'intelligence artificielle, de Turing à la cybernétique, pour comprendre comment une conception technique de l'esprit humain a pu prendre le pas sur toute autre forme de sagesse.
En confrontant l'IA à l'histoire des idées, à la philosophie ou à l'art, il montre que ce que nous appelons intelligence aujourd'hui est une réduction opérée par la société de la performance, de la rentabilité et du résultat. L'intelligence ainsi définie est une variable d'optimisation, et non une quête de vérité, une intuition, une sensibilité ou un élan. En cela, les machines peuvent effectivement la surpasser. Mais alors, qui sommes-nous vraiment, si ce n'est cela ?
Le pari de ce livre, finalement, est audacieux: il ne s'agit pas de pleurer la fin de l'intelligence, mais bien de s'en réjouir. Non pas craindre les IA, mais bien comprendre que leur essor est l'occasion, peut-être unique, de redéfinir ce que c'est que d'être humain. En finir avec l'intelligence, ce serait alors redonner naissance à l'intellect, à la sagesse, à la beauté, à la pensée désintéressée. À tout ce que l'algorithme ne peut ni saisir, ni simuler.
