Oliver Twist is a novel written by Charles Dickens, first published in 1838. Set in 19th-century England, the story follows the life of an orphan boy named Oliver Twist who is born into poverty and mistreatment. After enduring a harsh upbringing in a workhouse, Oliver is sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker where he is further subjected to abuse and neglect. Eventually, Oliver escapes and makes his way to London where he meets a group of pickpockets led by the infamous Fagin. Despite his reluctance, Oliver becomes embroiled in a life of crime and is eventually caught and rescued by a wealthy benefactor. The novel is known for its vivid depictions of Victorian-era London and its social commentary on poverty and the criminal justice system. Oliver Twist is considered one of Dickens' most enduring and popular works, and has been adapted into numerous films, plays, and musicals. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
