The maps end.
The Heron does not. Four hundred miles past the last reliable chart, the largest airship ever built carries explorers, craftsmen, paying passengers, and one fourteen-year-old chronicler whose entire job is to write down what happened.
The Heron does not. Four hundred miles past the last reliable chart, the largest airship ever built carries explorers, craftsmen, paying passengers, and one fourteen-year-old chronicler whose entire job is to write down what happened.
Ansa Vask believes facts can be preserved if someone is careful enough.
She has worked out that understanding can wait.
Nine days into a wood nobody has mapped there is a wall. In the wall there is a door that no tool will open. Behind the door there is a room with four fires burning in it, and nobody carried a flame in there, and the door has been shut for longer than anybody can count. Something is standing at the back of the room. Then it speaks, and she cannot give you that, and she has been asked for forty years. She can give you what the room did. It came out too low for ears. She had it in her chest before she had any of it in her ears, and then in the floor, through both knees, because she was down on them by that point. Every worked stone in that chamber said it back, a half beat behind and quieter.
The braziers stood in the middle of it and the flames did not bend.
It asks a question. Five people are in that room and not one of them can hear it.
Vane answers anyway.
They come home with nothing. That evening, in a common room with forty people in it and nobody making an occasion of anything, a woman four tables down asks what it sounded like.
Ansa reads out eleven letters she invented in the dark from a sound she had no business trying to spell.
The woman makes her say them three times. That is not one of the nine. The Last Chart is the third book of the Nine Winds Saga: a girl with a notebook four hundred miles past anybody's map, a door that was never meant to open, a forest held by two peoples who have not agreed in four hundred years, and a man of sixty-five who is fifteen miles from the only thing he has ever wanted.
It is also about the afternoon Ansa stood eleven feet away and watched a man go over a waterfall, and the one word she has refused to write ever since.
