Four years earlier, Li Meng and the stranded Kairos crew reached HD 40307 and survived where no one should have been able to survive. Beneath an alien star, on the surface of a world that slowly stopped feeling foreign, they began to detect patterns in the deep structure of spacetime itself: seventeen gravitational sequences that did not behave like weather, noise, or any known natural process. What began as anomaly became pattern. Pattern became response. And response began to look dangerously like intelligence.
By the time Chronos and Aether arrive, the rescue mission is already obsolete.
