On the Immortality of the Soul, Reincarnation and the Spiritual World
What becomes of the soul after death? Is there an afterlife? Does Judaism teach reincarnation?
For centuries, these profound questions have inspired theologians, philosophers, and seekers of spiritual truth. In Nishmat Chayyim, Menasseh ben Israel (1604-1657), one of the foremost Jewish scholars of the seventeenth century, offers one of the most comprehensive classical studies ever written on the destiny of the human soul and the spiritual world.
Drawing upon the Hebrew Bible, the Talmud, the Midrashim, and the great masters of Jewish mysticism, Menasseh ben Israel examines the immortality of the soul, the resurrection of the dead, gilgul (reincarnation), Gan Eden, Gehinnom, angels, demons, dreams, divine justice, free will, and humanity's ultimate spiritual purpose.
More than a theological treatise, Nishmat Chayyim is a remarkable synthesis of Jewish philosophy, rabbinic tradition, and Kabbalistic thought. Its careful reasoning and extensive use of classical sources have made it one of the enduring works of Jewish spiritual literature.
This English edition is based on the French translation established by Thierry Minkowski, itself prepared from the original Hebrew text. It presents the work in clear, accessible English while preserving the author's thought and structure. Descriptive section headings have been added solely to facilitate reading and navigation.
An indispensable work for readers interested in Jewish thought, Kabbalah, the immortality of the soul, reincarnation, and the spiritual teachings of one of Judaism's greatest seventeenth-century scholars.
