What happens when Scripture is read through Scripture itself?
Aggadat Bereshit - The Midrash of Beginnings opens the door to one of the fascinating worlds of classical Jewish interpretation, where a verse from Genesis may call forth the Psalms, the Prophets, or the Writings, and where biblical voices separated by centuries enter into conversation with one another.
Rooted in the ancient tradition of Midrash Aggadah, this work explores the stories of Genesis while reaching far beyond them. Abraham, Noah, Jacob, Israel, David, the prophets, and many other biblical figures become the starting points for reflections on human conduct, divine justice, repentance, exile, redemption, suffering, and hope.
Rather than offering a single interpretation, Aggadat Bereshit preserves the characteristic richness of rabbinic thought: one reading leads to another, a verse illuminates another verse, and apparently distant passages reveal unexpected connections.
This English edition, based on the 1903 Krakow edition, seeks to preserve the structure and distinctive voice of the Midrash while offering a clear and readable text for the contemporary reader.
Each chapter is followed by an analytical summary, providing guidance through the themes and interpretive movements of the text.
A journey into a tradition in which Scripture never ceases to speak-and in which every interpretation may become the beginning of another.
