Love and loss, renewal of spirit, courage, determination. Tom Woolfolk's characters are like the people you know, ordinary people who face adversity and do their best to overcome it. A woman attempts to come to grips with the death of her husband. A boy fights for his dream. Three sisters try to change their present bleak situation. An accident reveals the unexpected. A Christmas gathering brings a new challenge. This collection of nine stories, mostly set in Maryland, some short, some long, compiles tales of family, dogs, sports, loss, love, fly fishing, youthful mistakes, the bitterness of old age, rediscovery, the special bond of sisters, dedication, forgiveness. His voice is the voice of your next door neighbor, of a friend you've known a long time. He has an easy narrative style, telling stories in a natural way, full of the physical details that make you feel you are standing right there, of real dialogue, of real people, doing real things, a voice that makes you feel that you know these people, or wish you did. Rod and Anna are a young couple, starting out, finding their way in life, learning about each other. Margaret is a lonely widow, trying hard not to be bitter about the loss of her husband, when she makes a startling discovery. Cooper rediscovers the woman he loved long ago and, in the end, has to make a terrible decision. Al Tressler is a boy with a dream and the determination to pursue it, despite many obstacles. Clarissa thinks her life is a just a series of misfortunes, that she has lost any chance of happiness. Charlotte is loved, admired, even adored. She is successful, attractive, talented, but inside she knows what she really is.These characters, these people each have to find their way, to address their own problems, sometimes with a little help from others. They have to face their demons and defeat them. These are their stories.
