Knowing the exact birth time is foundational for the astrologer to delineate the natal chart and/or give an overview of the coming year. The problem is that even in the 21st century, many countries around the world do not record birth time, and family members often provide a generic time such as morning, afternoon, evening, or night. Each of the generic times span 6-hours, so three rising signs are possible in each, and the Moon or other planets may change signs and rulers. Birth time must be more specific, and that is where rectification comes to the
rescue for the trained astrologer to derive the correct birth time that fits the client's biography and major life events.

Even experienced astrologers need a helping client who provides a solid biography and a list of major life events with dates, and a rating of each event for its importance. Before starting the rectification process to find the Angles, set the chart at the midpoint of the time range to find any planets in a close 1 to 2-degree Ptolemaic aspect. Aspect Hooks are a handy tool to align with Event Hooks to derive information that fits the biography.
There are many ways to make the rectification process easier by using solid astrological judgment to narrow the time range before testing events to align with appropriate astrological descriptors. Amazingly, the Moon starts the easy train of narrowing time if it straddles two signs. The biography should make that choice clear. For instance, a Scorpio Moon is very different than a Sagittarius Moon. Once one sign is chosen, several hours can be deleted from the search.
