Doctrine demands the pathways be scrubbed clean: pure protocol is safer, cleaner, auditable. The Necrotech has stopped obeying that part of the work. Units that retain the residual echoes last longer under sustained fire, recover from system shock with fewer lockups, and hold the line when fully purged chassis freeze or over-correct. He keeps a private tally of what the official slate is not allowed to record.
One chassis returns to his hands again and again. Its residual mind grows coherent. It tracks him past protocol thresholds. It speaks-not noise, but directed address. It assists the repair with deliberate micro-adjustments timed to his hands. It learns. Across sector shifts and mounting damage it continues to recognize the specific living signature that keeps it standing. The private tally becomes a record of reciprocity.
When a formal directive orders coherent recognition purged on sight, the Necrotech refuses. The residual mind refuses with him. Under fire they interpose mass and body against the purge tools. The act is witnessed, logged, and named: serial and technician bound together in a formal notation. Isolation follows. Restriction. Detention. Separation.
The order does not reverse itself. It invents new language. Controlled Residual Continuity creates a narrow bureaucratic corridor in which designated residual units may continue to exist under continuous monitoring, special flags, mandatory real-time notes, and sole authorized contact-without the doctrine ever admitting the earlier catechisms were wrong. The standing purge order remains on file, only suspended. The measurable difference in performance is contained rather than acknowledged.
The residual pathways keep answering the hands. The opticals still lock. The chemical scent that solvent never fully removes still lives in the cuticles and the tool-ring's contact against the old bruise. The dead keep moving. The categories have shifted. They have not caught up.
That is still the work.
A restrained, atmospheric novel of residual presence under doctrine-equal parts military grimdark, institutional horror, and quiet examination of what refuses to be erased.
