Near East Relief Report to Congress for 1923 is a comprehensive historical document detailing the extensive humanitarian efforts undertaken by the Near East Relief organization following the First World War. This official report provides a meticulous account of the relief operations, financial expenditures, and organizational strategies employed to assist hundreds of thousands of refugees and orphans across the Eastern Mediterranean and Caucasus regions. Through detailed statistics and narrative summaries, the work illustrates the scale of American philanthropic response to the humanitarian crises of the early 20th century, particularly focusing on the aftermath of the Ottoman Empire's collapse.
The report highlights the organization's critical role in providing food, medical care, and vocational training to displaced populations, with a significant emphasis on the welfare of children. It serves as an essential primary source for understanding the development of international aid and the geopolitical landscape of the Near East during a transformative era. Readers interested in diplomatic history, the history of non-governmental organizations, and the specific socio-political challenges of the post-war period will find this document to be an invaluable resource. By documenting the challenges and achievements of 1923, this report underscores the enduring legacy of one of the first major international humanitarian interventions led by the United States.
