Near East Relief a Review for 1922 ( Annual Report to Congress ) serves as a primary historical record documenting one of the most significant humanitarian efforts of the early twentieth century. Authored by Charles V. Vickrey, this comprehensive report details the operations and achievements of the Near East Relief organization during a pivotal year of international crisis. Following the aftermath of the Great War and the collapse of the Ottoman Empire, the work outlines the monumental task of providing food, shelter, and medical care to millions of refugees and orphans across the region.
The text provides an in-depth look at the logistics of international aid, the management of orphanages, and the strategies employed to combat famine and disease in the face of political instability. Beyond simple statistics, the report captures the scale of the human tragedy and the global response it elicited, reflecting the birth of modern non-governmental organizational structures. This volume is an essential resource for historians of the Middle East, scholars of humanitarian history, and those interested in the evolution of American foreign philanthropy and its impact on post-war reconstruction and survival.
