The Names We Left on the Dock
What is left on a dock is never only luggage.
Afterward, each of them remembered a different sound. For one it was the engine - a diesel that had been idling badly for an hour and chose that exact moment to find its rhythm, a machine making a decision no person on that wharf had been willing to make out loud. For another it was the rope: the flat, unremarkable slap of a wet line hitting brown water. For the third it was not a sound at all but the absence of one, a voice she had been shouting toward, close enough that an answer should have reached her, and then simply nothing.
Ten seconds, on a fast brown river, in the spring of 1975. Three children of one family went three directions out of the same ten seconds and stayed there for fifty years.
Because their father bought six places on that boat, and not all six were used - and the only man who knows precisely how that happened is eighty-eight now, and has decided he is going to say it once, in an order, and would prefer not to be helped.
One sister has spent five decades in California selling gold and ruling lines under other people's totals. One has a life outside Paris that she built by not looking back at this one. One never left the city at all and has buried everybody in it. Between them they have three accounts of the same morning, and the three do not fit, and every one of them has built a life on the version she carries.
In a tin under a bed there is a key to a door that has not existed since 1976, and a set of letters with careful, deliberate gaps in them where a family agreed, without ever agreeing, what would not be written down.
Now an uncle is dying in a back room in Saigon, and for the first time in fifty years all three of them are going to be in it.
Three sisters, one wharf, fifty years of being certain. Not one of them will walk out of that room still believing what she believed walking into it.
