What Karma Remembers
Some debts are settled in a season. Some take a hundred and thirty years. She knows the four steps down from the house on their exact angles, knows which has begun to soften, knows the dog will not bark because the dog is thirteen. Nari Saengthong has walked the water gates before first light every morning for eleven years. There is one stretch of water on that land she has never gone near after dark, and she could not tell you why, because nobody has ever finished telling her the story. Her father dies on an ordinary Tuesday, and by the end of that week there is a woman from Bangkok at the kitchen table with a folder, a signing day, a broker who smiles, and a debt on the land three sisters did not know their family carried. And there is their grandmother, eighty-eight, who has put out one particular offering every week for sixty-one years, and who finally says, to a room that never once asked her: There is one more person. The company wants the signature before the end of the season. The rites, if they are ever to be done properly, have to be done first. Both cannot happen. Everybody tells the story of the pond and nobody finishes it. Two sisters went in and one came out - a hundred years ago, or eighty, or it was somebody's grandmother's grandmother who saw it. Ask them the name of either sister and watch how fast the laughing stops. Eighty metres from that water stands a tree old enough to have watched it happen, called by every generation of women who walked past it only the old one: close enough to reverence to keep it standing, never close enough to ask what it stands over. A phi tai hong is not evil. It is a debt that has not finished being counted. And somebody in that kitchen is going to have to say her name. A haunting, quietly furious novel of land, merit and the dead we were never taught to name - for readers of Yangsze Choo's The Night Tiger, Madeleine Thien, and Lisa See.
