The first time I saw a Naga Sadhu up close, he was sitting beside a road outside Nashik, watching the smoke from a fire he had made in a patch of gravel. He owned a trident, a brass water pot, and the ash on his body. That was everything.
I sat down. Forty minutes later I walked back to the river not entirely sure what I had just encountered.
This book is the result of a decade trying to find out.
Naga Sadhus are among the most photographed and least understood figures in India. At every Kumbh Mela they appear in their tens of thousands, ash-covered, naked, moving toward the river in processions that have not changed in centuries. Tourists photograph them from a distance. Devotees touch their feet. Almost nobody asks what it actually took to become one of them, or what the tradition they belong to really contains.
Naked Before Shiva goes inside that tradition. Not the version you see at the riverbank, posed for cameras in the early morning light. The version you find at a dhuni in a Varanasi lane at two in the morning, or in the back of an Akhada camp on a non-bathing day, when the pilgrimage machinery has quieted and a man who has been at his fire for thirty years is willing to talk.
The book covers what the Naga Sadhu tradition actually involves: the initiation that requires a man to perform his own funeral before he can begin; the eleven-year probationary period that precedes that ceremony; the philosophy behind the nakedness, which is not exhibitionism but a specific claim about the nature of identity; the cannabis use that is simultaneously a theological practice and a legal anomaly; the Kumbh Mela's procession order, which has caused stampedes and deaths and is negotiated months in advance by institutions with more political power than most people realize.
It also covers what the tradition does not advertise: the fake Naga problem that hollows out the edges of the institution; the women who have taken the initiation and receive almost none of the recognition; the Akhada succession disputes that end in violence; the child welfare questions that nobody inside the tradition has answered with the transparency the risks warrant.
This is not a devotional book. It is not written to defend the tradition or to condemn it. The Naga Sadhu world contains both genuine human transformation and ordinary institutional failure, and this account tries to report both honestly, in the words of the people who live inside it.

The man outside Nashik told me he had been working for some years on the project of not being entirely identical with his body. I have been thinking about that answer ever since.
