I did not go back to Mayong for the village this time. I went back for the man.
The first book showed you the outside of a healer's life. This one shows you what it costs him.
Khenoram is a bez, a hereditary healer in Mayong, Assam, and for six more weeks he let me sit close enough to watch what the first book never showed. The refusals that haunt him more than any success. The brass box he has not opened since he was a young man, and will not explain. The family photograph that should have eleven people in it, and does not. The boy he has started quietly watching, without telling anyone why, and without knowing yet if he is right to hope.
I do not have a clean word for what a man like this carries. I am not sure he does either.
This book contains no rituals, no mantras, and no instructions. What it contains is six weeks inside a life most people only hear about secondhand, told by the one person who finally let someone close enough to ask what it actually costs.
