A blog post started the Forever War.
Fifteen years later, no one seems to remember exactly why anyone is still fighting.
Sixteen-year-old Dylan Austen has never known a world without war. His father came home from combat missing a leg. His older sister went to war and never came back. At school, history lessons have been replaced by military propaganda, target practice, and government-approved video games designed to prepare kids for the battlefield.
Most teenagers can't wait for their chance to fight.
Dylan can.
Skinny, sarcastic, and routinely picked last during school war games, Dylan is about the least promising soldier imaginable. He isn't strong. He isn't brave. He isn't even particularly good at the video games that are supposedly training his generation for combat.
Then the recruiting age drops.
Suddenly Dylan, his best friend Trinity, and thirteen-year-old gamer Hunter are shipped off with a company of kids considered too weak to waste time training. Their first mission sends them into an abandoned Disneyland, where what begins like another government war game becomes terrifyingly real.
Against every expectation, Dylan survives.
Worse, he becomes a hero.
Promoted and sent north to the brutal battlefields surrounding Seattle, Dylan is placed in charge of soldiers who have little reason to trust him-and even less reason to believe he knows what he's doing. To keep them alive, he'll have to discover that leadership has nothing to do with being the strongest person in the room.
And the longer Dylan fights, the more he begins to question everything he has been taught: who the enemy really is, why the Forever War began, and whether anyone in charge even wants it to end.
Because somewhere beneath the propaganda, the video games, and years of senseless fighting lies an absurd truth.
And Dylan may be one of the first people willing to do something about it.
