Recently divorced, overworked, and doubting herself, Laura Humphreys takes a sabbatical to paradise and becomes a volunteer for a sea turtle conservation project. She falls in love with the Costa Rican landscape and becomes friends with the Leatherback Sea Turtle Conservancy (LSTC) biologist, Gabriel Montenegro, unaware that his life had been threatened the previous season on the same beach she is headed to.
Daniela Segura runs LSTC and has been friends with Gabriel for years. She works tirelessly to obtain security for the program knowing foreign volunteers will be arriving soon. Daniela's father started LSTC, and she is determined to keep the conservancy a top rated eco-volunteer program.
Esteban Rojas and Wendigo are college buddies and business partners in a successful and popular river rafting tour company. They are expanding their enterprise to include a side business. Just as that business starts to increase its profits, things start to go wrong.
Esteban's men, a crew of six, work the river rafting business during the day and assist with the new venture's shipments at night. Several men are making egregious mistakes and taking too much initiative. Their sloppy work could end in murder.
Antonio De La Torres is the lead investigator determined to have an honest investigation and bring the guilty parties to justice. Evidence is missing and there are unexpected delays from the crime lab. He suspects someone within the government may be involved.
Daniela and Laura join forces with the global conservation community to advocate for change. Just as they get momentum, Daniela becomes seriously ill and must rely on Laura to take her place resolving business with the Ministry of the Environment (MINAE).
Antonio and Laura spend more time together as he escorts her to MINAE meetings, radio interviews, and assisting Daniela. Each attracted to the other, finally find the opportunity to be alone. Antonio's attraction to Laura makes him even more committed to his goal but he may be running out of time. Laura realizes she is in over her head and her employer is contacting her needing her to come back home. She is confused over this new relationship with Antonio and knows her sabbatical will be ending soon.
Laura learns that paradise isn't always what it seems and wonders if this new relationship can survive long distance.
