ENGLISH DESCRIPTION Javier MarÃas profiles a selection of his favorite Spanish-language authors This book has its origins in Perfect Artists, the appendix to Javier MarÃas's Written Lives, which profiles thirty-seven authors, all of them foreign and all of them dead. The absence from that list of any authors writing in Spanish led him to publish a new collection of profiles in Cuadernos Cervantes magazine, featuring Valle-Inclán, Borges, Aleixandre, Benet, Bioy Casares, GarcÃa Lorca, Victoria Ocampo, Fernando Savater, Cabrera Infante, Neruda, Mendoza, MartÃnez Sarrión, Cernuda and Quiroga. These descriptions and more are collected in this volume, accompanied by a fake self-portrait of the author - for, as MarÃas observes, he could not resist the temptation to turn the same gaze on himself.
