ENGLISH DESCRIPTION
An intense and compelling novel about the issues that touch us all: concealment, facts, and intentions; acting without knowing and the will that so often fails us; the denial of those we once loved, forgetting and indecision; farewell, and ultimately, deception.
The mesmerizing opening line of this novel reveals much--perhaps too much: No one ever imagines they might one day find themselves embracing a dead woman, never to see again the face whose name they still remember.
This is precisely what happens to the narrator, VÃctor Francés, a television screenwriter and ghostwriter who crafts speeches for influential yet often uninformed public figures. Recently divorced, VÃctor accepts an invitation to dinner from Marta Téllez, a married woman whose husband is away on business and the mother of a two-year-old son. After an intimate evening together, the two retreat to the bedroom where, still half-dressed and half-undressed, Marta suddenly falls ill. In a harrowing and unforgettable scene, she begins to die--and does. Their unconsummated affair becomes a kind of haunting spell, forcing VÃctor into an impossible moral dilemma with immediate and devastating consequences. What should he do with the body? Should he call for help or remain silent? How should he face the absent husband? What about the sleeping child? And where, in the end, does the boundary between life and death truly lie?
