The constant clack of the wiper blades is the only sound reaching inside the cab of the Chevy pickup as it eases down the road. The heavens had opened up and rain pelts the truck as the man at the wheel struggles to see the road through the darkness. He glances back to check his cargo, never noticing that he is not alone on the road tonight. A hundred feet behind him, a wet and exhausted animal struggles along the shoulder to keep pace with the vehicle. Her name is Maggie, a Labrador mix, and she is the best friend of Dayle, a young woman who is strangled and left for dead by a man who seeks vengeance for a transgression known only to him. A beautiful, gold locket provides the key to unlocking the mystery of his identity. Dayle's story of survival and triumph creates the backdrop for a saga that begins with a dysfunctional family and the struggle to overcome bad decisions and a disadvantaged childhood.
